Julia Morley and the Petition to Show Miss World 2016 Final Scorecards

The Miss World 2016 Finals held in Washington DC, USA on December 18, 2016 would have been just one of the ordinary pageant finals in the Miss World history had it not been marred with controversy regarding two national directors; Liliana Tanoesoedibjo from Indonesia, and Wilnelia Merced - Forsyth from Puerto Rico who sat as final telecast judges. Well, not an issue at all had Indonesia not won 2nd Runner Up and Puerto Rico not crowned as the new Miss World.

While there are a lot of pageant fans who respect the results, a lot of pageant fans especially from the Philippines got disappointed of Miss World Philippines Catriona Gray -- who despite of a standout performance and a very good answer to the final question -- not making it to the Top 3. At the height of the protests informally made online, one fan started a petition at Change.Org asking Julia Morley and the Miss World Organization as a whole to show the MW2016 Final Scorecards to the public. They were of the impression that the two national directors influenced other judges to vote in their hometown candidates' favor. Sounds absurd, isn't it?

Julia Morley in the early seventies

On a personal note, yes, I find it absurd. However, if you look back at the past Miss World pageant finals, this controversy is reminiscent of what happened in 1970. Jennifer Hosten of Greanada won over an early favorite Miss Sweden - Marjorie Christel Johansson who turned out to be just the 3rd Runner Up. Protesters claimed --who called BBC -- that the Grenadian Prime Minister Sir Eric Gairy who sat as a judge tipped and influenced other judges to give Hosten token placings.

Snippet from a published article in 1970.

The incident was published in a magazine published by African Drum Publications in 1971 showing that Julia Morley, who was then Miss World Organizing Director and the wife of Miss World Chairman Eric Morley to have resigned because of intense pressure from protesters.  Eric Morley was then compelled to show to the public the actual scorecards of the Miss World 1970 pageant.

So this Change.Org petition may not be absurd after all. History repeats itself as they say. Oh, not just history but Miss World controversy history.

  5. In the first place it is unethical and conflict of interest to allow such judges because it is pretty much bias and so unfair not only to the philippines but to other candidates... indonesia not that good answer compare to kenya... but she won because of their directress... it seems that these judges will push their candidates to win obviously they are the directress of their local pageants in their country... i think the organization is intelligent enough to know these things... what is right and what is wrong and it is disrespectful to other countries... be fair because everyone worked so hard to reach their dreams. This is beauty with a purpose not for business.

  6. I won't disagree with the result of Miss World 2016 if only no 2 national directors SAT as judges in the panel who obviously would favor their own respective candidates. And placing Miss Indonesia in 2nd place? Oh common, is it because she win BWAP? It should be back to zero judging after top 20 or after top 10.Cat's answer was not rehearsed ...That's her a real and genuine Queen who is consistent with her being really kind and a soft for the less fortunate.Again, placing Indonesia in 2nd place ruined the whole pageant.Previous non placements of Philippine candidates were acceptable..?But Cat's case for not winning even a runner up? that's a different story... I'm not a pageant fanatic but obviously I can sense some injustices here.👎

Some interesting facts and CONTROVERSIES in Miss World 2016:

I have nothing against the winner. In fact, she is lovely. However, there are things which I believe, the Miss World Organization should avoid to be considered 'Credible', Fair and Just in choosing their winners. After all, MW is dubbed as an Alpha pageant so credibility and quality should always be the goal to maintain its prestige and honor.

And All the girls and the people involved have really worked hard with their sweat and blood dripping, thinking that the judgment process will be fair.

*The Puerto Rican National Director who is also a former Miss World sat as a judge during the Finals and Puerto Rico sponsored the Miss World 2016 Fashion Show together with Indonesia. (In any pageant, it is considered unethical if a National Director sits as a judge. It is very distasteful). What would the other National Directors feel when they learnt that their fellow 'competitors' are included in judging process?

*Indonesia had hosted the Miss World pageant in 2013 and will be hosting again next year. China won the crown two times in their home country (2007 and 2012) and had hosted the pageant six times. Expect, that Indonesia will get the crown soon. But if she is DESERVING and worthy of the crown, we will be the first to REJOICE!

*The Indonesian National Director sat as a judge during the Miss World 2016 Top Model competition. Indonesia got second place and 1st place in Beauty with a Purpose Project.

*Last year, the same Indonesian National Director was included in the panel of judges. Indonesia won Third Place.

*The Philippines had been poised to host the pageant but due to some factors it did not materialize. Julia Morley must have been very disheartened upon learning that the country chose to host Miss Universe instead. So axing a very deserving winner is the sweetest revenge. Sorry Catriona, you have become the sacrificial lamb!

Lessons for the National Directors who aspire to win:

*Be a major sponsor or host the pageant so Julia Morley will give you the crown. Call me bittermelon, but I need to divulge these facts to spread awareness of the shameless politics in Miss World. These need to stop! Seriously.
